Legenda
Prof. Riccardo Meucci has made pioneering contributions to reveal deterministic chaos in lasers. In the early 1980s at the NationalInstitute of Optics (Florence, Italy), he was a major contributor to a path-breaking experiment (in the laboratory of Professor F. T. Arecchi, his mentor and supervisor at the time) on chaotic behavior in a CO2 laser with periodic forcing applied to the cavity loss parameter [1]. Another major discovery was made in this pioneering experiment; the simultaneous presence of two or more attractors for the same values of the control parameter. This phenomenon, known as generalized multistability, is now widely investigated in many other fields.
A few years later, Prof. Meucci was a key contributor to experiments and models where chaos in a laser was achieved by using an electro-optic feedback acting on the same time scale of the other two relevant variables [2,3]. Nowadays, electro-optic feedback is largely used in chaotic semiconductor lasers whose dynamics evolves on faster time scales than that of the CO2 laser. The key role of time-delayed feedback dynamics was pointed out in other well-known experiments on CO2 lasers [4].
Prof. Meucci pioneered experiments on control of chaos using both feedback and open loop methods using lasers and electronic oscillators. In a seminal experiment in 1994, chaos was controlled and redirected on a stable periodic solution by applying small periodic perturbations with a fine adjustment of the relative phase with respect to a main forcing responsible for chaos [5]. This open-loop method for chaos control is today known as “phase control of chaos” [6].
Two other major contributions are optical characterization of liquid crystals in the Mid infrared region [7], and Infrared Digital Holography [8]. Extension of Digital Holography to the infrared region has several advantages over the visible spectral range, as it allows wider aperture scenes (of several meters size) and has better mechanical stability with respect to environmental vibrations. Both these features are crucial for vision through smoke and flames [9] (which is possible using IR radiation in a lensless imaging configuration) and for monitoring intrinsic vibrations of buildings or infrastructures [10]. These applications are now of particular and strategic interest of laser industries and for the Italian Civil Protection Department for safety applications.

Main scientific contributions:
His research interests include nonlinear dynamics, chaos, control of chaos, synchronization and infrared digital holography. In the early 1980s at the National Institute of Optics (Florence, Italy) he contributed to a pioneer experiment on chaotic behavior in a CO2 laser when a periodic forcing was applied to the cavity loss parameter. In this pioneer experiment, also “generalized multistability” was discovered. Few years later, he contributed to other experiments where chaos in a laser was achieved by using an electro- optic feedback acting on the same time scale of the other two relevant variables. Riccardo Meucci has been active also on control of chaos using both feedback and open loop methods on experiments using lasers and electronic oscillators. In a seminal experiment in 1994, chaos was controlled and redirected on a stable periodic solution by applying small periodic perturbations with a fine adjustment of the relative phase with respect to a main forcing responsible for chaos. This open-loop method for chaos control is today known as “phase control of chaos“.
Another field of investigation by Riccardo Meucci is Digital Holography in the mid infrared region, using CO2 lasers. Extension of this coherent technique to the infrared region, has several advantages over the visible spectral range, allowing vision through smoke and flames and monitoring intrinsic vibrations of buildings or infrastructures.
